Women urged to get on their bike for Scone’s Scottish Cycletta

Over 600 female cyclists crossed the start line of Scotland's first 'Cycletta' in 2013.
Over 600 female cyclists crossed the start line of Scotland's first 'Cycletta' in 2013.

Young women from across Perth and Kinross are being urged to draw inspiration from the upcoming Commonwealth Games by getting on their bikes.

As the date of the second annual Scottish Cycletta event draws near, the organisers are hoping to recruit more female cyclists.

Backed by British Olympian Victoria Pendleton, the sportive raises money for Macmillan and will take place at Scone Palace on October 5.

Perth and Kinross Provost Elizabeth Grant has again been given the honour of waving the women off and is encouraging more people to sign up.

She said: “I am delighted to welcome Macmillan Cycletta back to Scotland and Perthshire, and to be part of this fantastic event.

“In the year when Scotland comes under the world’s sporting spotlight as hosts of the Commonwealth Games and the Ryder Cup, it’s great to offer an event that encourages more and more women into cycling, and I especially hope the young women of Scotland sign up and take part.”

Among those considering taking on the women-only challenge are Amy Bauchope and Rosa Hollas, both 14 and pupils at Perth High School. “I’d really love to take part,” Amy said.

“I’m hoping to get a bike for my birthday, which is this month, and I’ve asked my mum if she’d like to take part with me.

“It would be my first major sporting event and would be really great fun.”

Females aged from 12 upwards can sign up for a variety of routes, from the 20km jaunt aimed at novices, to the 100km for those who enjoy a bit of a challenge.
