Strathearn residents incensed at risk of damage from Travellers’ site

A Strathearn community group is angry after a Traveller encampment was established close to a local beauty spot.

Residents claim footpaths have been littered while a riverbank has been clogged up with human excrement and toilet paper.

People in Comrie are incensed at the arrival of the Travellers, who have set up eight caravans and various vans in a car park near the Linn pool.

Police Scotland, Perth and Kinross Council and the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (Sepa) have all been notified.

It is believed the Travellers have been at the site for around a week but some locals are worried about the effect the encampment may have on the area with the Comrie Fortnight now under way.

David Robertson, vice-chairman of Comrie Community Council, said he felt they had “done all they could”.

He added: “There are between seven and eight caravans there and some vans in the car park where they have set up this encampment.

“I understand the Travellers arrived about a week ago.

“It means that anyone wishing to use the car park can’t do so as the Travellers have taken up the whole area there.

“This has caused concern, especially with the Comrie Fortnight taking place and the Linn being a popular tourist spot.”

And a Comrie resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said he had spoken to a council officer who had told him how long Travellers could stay at such sites. He claimed the local authority chief had said they carried out “useful” work in the community.

“I could not believe what I was hearing,” the resident said.

“This council officer had lots of facts about Travellers, including their rights. However, he didn’t speak about the mess they leave.

“I’ve heard it costs around £4,000 to serve a notice on them by the council but the Travellers usually only stay for around two weeks.”

The police said they had been made aware of the encampment in Comrie but had not received any complaints from the public.

But a spokesman for Sepa said: “Sepa has received a complaint from a member of the public regarding a Travellers’ site at the Linn, Comrie.

“We are in contact with all relevant partner organisations regarding this matter.”

A spokesman for the local authority said: “The council is aware of a temporary encampment of Gypsy Travellers on private land in Comrie.

We are liaising with the landowner, the group of Travellers on site and with our partner agencies in line with normal procedures regarding temporary encampments.

“We will continue to monitor the situation.”
