A team of Tayside women have embarked on a six-day trek across 108 miles of the Arctic Circle for charity.
The Atte Huskyteers have already raised £105,000 for four good causes Insight Counselling, Age Scotland, Medical Detection Dogs and Coppafeel and are flying to Norway today.
The women will live, eat and sleep inside the Arctic, driving a team of huskies across the tundra from Tromso in Norway to Kiruna in Sweden.
The idea came about after Auchterhouse woman Amanda Nissen, 44, revealed to the rest of the group that it was her mum Gill’s dying wish to mush huskies across the Arctic.
Dubbing themselves the ‘Atte Huskyteers’, after the Norwegian for eight and the Alexandre Dumas novel Three Musketeers, the octet resolved to complete the quest as a tribute.
All the money collected will be donated to charity as the women have funded all expenses for the trip themselves.
Carroll Gibson, 46, from Dundee said she is nervous but excited to embark on the adventure.
She said: “I’m also glad all the training is finished and I don’t need to lift any more weights or flip tyres.
“I’m amazed at the support we’ve had people are generous, but I had no idea that it would be like this.”
Fiona Laird, 45, from Memus said the group, which includes Carroll Gibson, Georgina Spacey, Sarah Moss, Sabrina Simpson, Amanda Wiewiorka and Julie Husband, had initially feared they would not hit their £100,000 target.
She added: “All our expenses are being paid for by ourselves and some of our equipment has been donated by companies.”
