A massive hazardous dump of rotting plasterboard and carpets on the border of Perth and Kinross and Fife and will cost £500,000 to clear up, a court has heard.
Thousands of tonnes of waste were abandoned at the site near Dunfermline when a recycling business set up to dispose of it collapsed.
Michael Hope from Glenfarg and James Winters from Powmill, Kinross-shire were warned they could be jailed for creating the menace.
They had been turning the waste plasterboard into animal bedding until environmental watchdog, Sepa stepped in.
They were told the mixture of plasterboard and animal waste could create deadly noxious fumes and their firm went bust overnight.
Both appeared at Dunfermline Sheriff Court to admit environmental breaches.
The vast pile of rubbish remains in place with no one willing to pay for its removal.
