Proposals for a new retirement housing development in Kinross have received the backing of local residents.

A bid to create 33 flats designed sepcifically for people over the age of 60 on land to the north of the Green Hotel on Muirs has been made by McCarthy and Stone.

Although planning consent already exists for 41 properties on the same site, this is not being taken forward.

As an alternative, the developer has proposed the construction of a contemporary building which is significantly smaller than the previous proposals for the site and will better complement the surrounding conservation area.

More than 50 people attended a public exhibition, which was held at the Windlestrae Hotel.

Feedback forms that were collected on the day showed there was a lot of support for the new development.

Around 88% of those who responded said they would back the proposals, while 77% acknowledged that there was a requirement for further retirement housing in the area.

Managing director of McCarthy and Stone Scotland, Steve Wiseman, said the company was happy with the response.

He said: “We value the views of local residents and will consider their feedback in putting together a planning application to Perth and Kinross Council in the next couple of months.

“We were pleased to see so many people come to see the proposals particularly in light of the miserable weather conditions and were encouraged by their feedback.

“We believe that our proposal could provide much-needed housing options for older people in the local area and help boost the local economy by bringing new investment and jobs.”
