Complaint raises fear of death knell for Milnathort Town Hall chimes

For more than a century, residents of a Kinross-shire village have looked to the comforting chimes of their public clock to tell them the time.

The bells in Milnathort Town Hall have rung out through the streets since the 1850s. However the historic chimes face being silenced following a single complaint about the noise.

At a meeting of the local community council a resident asked whether they could be switched off between 10.30pm and 7am.

Local councillor Joe Giacopazzi has agreed to take the issue up with the town hall committee.

However, Mr Giacopazzi himself believes the chimes are not a noise nuisance.

He said: “I was born in the flat opposite the town hall clock 62 years ago and I can assure you, you get used to it. You don’t know it’s ringing.

“If you are new to the area it will keep you awake the first couple of nights but you learn to live with it.”

He added that the complainer appeared to be new to the area.

“You don’t notice it (the chimes) but she doesn’t accept that she said her father was up visiting and was annoyed about it because it kept him awake, which I can understand if you are just visiting and you are new.”

Though unable to predict the committee’s view, he added: “Apparently, they can’t be switched off only at certain times it’s either all or nothing. I have a gut feeling that they won’t be happy to turn it off 24/7.”
