Colleagues have paid tribute to a serving police officer who died at the weekend.

Steve Salmean fell ill while out cycling near Little Ballo, Abernyte, shortly after 10am on Saturday.

An ambulance was called but, sadly, paramedics were unable to save PC Salmean and he was declared dead at the scene.

The 50-year-old father-of-two had 27 years’ police service and had worked in Tayside since 1993.

Colleagues have taken to the internet to praise his dedication in the role.

Murray Haston wrote: “I was lucky enough to work with Steve many times when he was a SOCO and I was always delighted to see it was him when he got out the van because I knew we’d get the best enquiry carried out, as he was so professional, methodical and dedicated to his job.

“An absolutely fantastic guy who will be missed.”

Ann Rands added: “You were such a great guy to work with, often in the most difficult of circumstances.

“I always felt a sense of relief when I saw you were at any of my call-outs, as I knew it was in safe hands.

“Scotland has lost a great bobby and such a lovely guy.”

Evan Macdonald stated: “Taken far too early. Rest easy, Steve, youcertainly did your shift.”

Steve’s reputation expanded beyond the boundary of his owndepartment.

Eoghann McPherson said: “Though I never had the opportunity or privilege to work directly with Steve, I certainly knew of his excellent reputation, professionalism and camaraderie.

“My sincere condolences to all Steve’s family and friends.”

The Scottish PoliceFederation north areacommittee said Steve would be missed by colleagues across the country.
