Driver caused crash by failing to clear frozen windscreen

A DRIVER who failed to clear his windscreen properly caused a crash after veering on to the wrong side of the road.
Within minutes of leaving his Kinross-shire home, Graham Montgomery (45), of Mossbeg, was involved in a collision with another motorist as he was unable to see where he was going.
Perth Sheriff Court heard on Tuesday that the other driver had been heading in the opposite direction and had desperately tried to take evasive action.
Depute fiscal Stuart Richardson said: “To his horror, he noticed that Montgomery had drifted over on to the other side of the road and was headed straight for him. He tried to slow his car down to a standstill and was sounding his horn.
“The witness saw that the windscreen wasn’t clear and Montgomery couldn’t see him coming, so the accident couldn’t be avoided.”
The accused, a potato packer in Abernethy, told the court he had cleared the frost from his car but it had “refrozen”.
He admitted driving dangerously on September 22 on the B918 Turfhills to Tillyochie road.
Montgomery was fined £500, disqualified from driving for one year and ordered to sit the extended test.
