Perth Farmers’ Market returning to favourite base

Perth Farmers’ Market faces the challenge of succeeding in a tough economic climate as it returns for a 13th year on Saturday.

The first market of 2012 follows a successful 2011, when stall numbers were up and footfall increased.

Huge efforts will be made to maintain the upward trend and it is testament to the success of the market that a number of the original 12 stallholders including Hilton Wild Boar, Jim Fairlie’s lamb and the Cairn O’Mohr Winery will be playing their part.

Market chairman Andrew Scarlett said quality of product and service and, in particular, ”enthusiasm” would be key to the market’s success.

He outlined his thoughts on the coming year, saying: ”We faced a number of challenges last year with roadworks causing us to move to a slightly less visible area around the city hall.

”Our ever-growing group of regular customers stuck with us however and we are now delighted to be back in our more familiar location just off the High Street.”

He added: ”I believe that one of the main reasons for our success is the enthusiasm of the stall-holders when talking to potential customers. If you are the person who has put your heart and soul into supplying the highest quality produce you can, then it is only natural that you are delighted to discuss this when given the opportunity.

”In a world where improved customer service is being promoted as vital to the success of large businesses it is heartening to see small local producers warmly embracing this culture.”

Mr Scarlett said: ”Where else can buyers speak directly to the person who made the product? When large retailers in general seem to be feeling the pinch it is encouraging that local Perthshire area producers are facing the challenge head on.”

He added: ”The market also tries to be an ambassador for Perth by appearing at events like the Royal Highland Show and being a focal point of interest to the large number of out of town shoppers and overseas visitors. Our information point directs people not only to produce around the market but also to attractions in the greater Perth area.”

The market takes place on Saturday between 9am and 2pm. An array of local produce will be arrayed on the many stalls within the town’s King Edward Street.

On offer will be fresh meats and seafood, with vegetables and breads, cakes, pies, wines and chocolates.
