Pitcairngreen marks £105,000 village hall project

The Pitcairngreen village hall reopens today after a £105,000 redevelopment project.

The hall, serving Almondbank, Pitcairngreen and the surrounding area, has been restored inside and out in recognition of the local conservation area status.

Dignitaries including Provost John Hulbert, councillors and local politicians will be joined by villagers and representatives from project funders for the event.

Pipers will welcome visitors at 1.45pm, with the hall to be officially reopened by the Countess of Mansfield.

Locals and guests will be invited to view the new facilities and enjoy yoga, karate and zumba demonstrations, plus information stands for the Orchid Society, the Friends of Cognac and local playgroups, mums and tots, WRI, horticultural society and fitness and business groups.

There will also be a silent auction, tombola, teas and home baking.

Pitcairngreen pupils will also present a time capsule to be buried at the hall for future generations to find.

It contains items relevant to school life in 2010, including a mobile phone, highlighter pens, Blu-Tack, coins, pencils, keys, a Dairy Milk chocolate, Earl Haig Poppy and handwritten messages to the teachers.

During the renovations, workers found something of a time capsule. Items dating from the 19th century, including a lead brooch already identified as a clan tag plus writing utensils and paperwork dated 1885 were found.

Much of it relates to when the hall was a school and includes pages of “dictation” in near-perfect handwriting.

The reopening event will run until 4.30pm.
