St John’s Academy tuning up for 12-hour music ‘Playathon’

The age-old shout of “quiet in class” will be dismissed for a day as a Perth school takes part in a 12-hour, non-stop music marathon.

The St John’s Academy Playathon will see musical maestros creating a day-long melody on March 30, with no breaks and no silences allowed.

The event was due to take place in December but the adverse weather left their plans distinctly out of tune. However, it has given the budding musicians another three months to practise for their exhausting effort.

The school’s principal teacher of music, Jenny Hossick, said, “Pupils will be sponsored to be take part in a 12-hour long non-stop music event, collecting money for the Scottish Catholic International Aid Fund.

“Starting at 8am, music will be performed right through until 8pm that evening. Classes that are in music that day will prepare a musical ‘concert’ for their period this might take the shape of a number of group pieces or each pupil performing a piece one after the other.

“The golden rule is that there should be no silence the next person starts just as the previous one is finishing. Senior pupils will be on hand to ensure the music keeps flowing.

“Other pupils will sign up to perform at interval and lunchtime, and before and after the school day. Altogether we expect to have around 150 pupils and staff taking part.”
