New Aberdeen store could appeal to IKEA fans in Courier country

The Aberdeen store would operate mainly as a collection point for online orders.
The Aberdeen store would operate mainly as a collection point for online orders.

Fans of furniture firm IKEA could soon have a new option with reports that the Swedish giant will open a new store on the south side of Aberdeen.

The Evening Express reports that the company is aiming to open in the city on November 30, in time for the festive season.

The store would be in the Wellington Industrial Estate, just off the main Dundee-Aberdeen A90, and would operate on an order-and-collect basis, rather than as a full-size outlet such as seen in Edinburgh and Glasgow.

There would be a limited product range available in store. There are also plans for a customer cafe.

At just over 60 miles away, it would be slightly closer to Dundee than is the Edinburgh store and should offer a quicker round trip.

If the plan goes ahead, it will be the third IKEA in Scotland.

An IKEA spokeswoman remained coy, saying: “Over the next year, IKEA will test three order and collection points in the UK, exploring slightly different formats in each selected market and using this as an opportunity to find out more about how customers want to shop with IKEA in these areas.”

The news could rekindle interest among local campaigners.

Last year, a Facebook page urging IKEA to open in Dundee gained thousands of supporters.
