Police investigating A8 gunfire reports want to trace motorcyclist

Police teams search Ratho Station area of Edinburgh after reports of a gun being fired.
Police teams search Ratho Station area of Edinburgh after reports of a gun being fired.

Detectives investigating shots that were fired at a property want to trace the rider of a motorbike spotted near the scene.

Police were called to the property at Ratho Station west of Edinburgh at around 9.30pm on Monday. Officers believe it was not a random act, however no-one was injured.

A stretch of the busy A8 route nearby was shut for around 14 hours after the incident.

A stationary motorbike was seen at a bus stop on the north side of the road before the shots. The bike and rider then took off at speed towards Edinburgh, police said.

Detective Chief Inspector Stuart Houston, who is leading the investigation, said: “At this stage we are keen to trace the rider of a dark-coloured motorbike that was present on the north carriageway of the A8, about 9.30pm just prior to the report of shots being fired.

“It is possible that this vehicle may also have travelled from the Gogar roundabout towards Newbridge roundabout a short time before the incident.

“I am keen to hear from anyone who may have seen a motorbike in that road or the surrounding side roads at that time or if they were themselves the rider, to come forward as they may be able to assist by excluding themselves from the investigation.”

Mr Houston appealed for information from anyone travelling on the A8 who may have seen a motorbike, vehicles stopped near the bus stop on the north side of the road or persons on the footway or the road.

He reassured the public that high visibility patrols will be carried out in the Ratho Station area as the investigation continues.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact Police Scotland on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
