Horticulturist and businessman Neville Trainer

Angus horticulturist and businessman Neville Trainer has died after a short illness at the age of 59.

Neville, who ran his own landscaping firm, based near Brechin, travelled throughout the north-east of Scotland to work on gardening projects and had an extensive and loyal client base.

Born in Tyneside, he began his company in 1990 and specialised in landscape design and layout, including rockeries, patios, fencing, ponds, heather gardens, golf courses and bowling greens.

His extensive knowledge of plants, trees and the environment was acquired through years of training, including three years studying at the Royal Botanic Garden in Edinburgh.

While studying in Edinburgh he met his future wife Beth and they married in 1976.

Neville lectured at Northumberland College of Horticulture after completing his course.

In 1978 he moved north to take up a position with Dundee District Council’s park department as training officer and then later as district parks superintendent.

After starting his own business he went on to win a Business Start-up Award organised by the Angus Enterprise Trust in 1992 and he was also involved in the design of the children’s outside play area at Ninewells Hospital in 2002.

The enthusiasm and depth of knowledge on all things related to gardening and the natural world were clear to see by all who knew Neville.

He is survived by his wife Beth and his two daughters, Sarah and Lisa.

A funeral service will be held at Aberlemno Church at 11am tomorrow.
