Former RCAF airman George Ives

George Ives, a Canadian who was well known in Dundee sporting and musical circles, has died aged 87 in Tweed, Ontario.

Mr Ives came to Scotland from Toronto as an officer in the Royal Canadian Air Force, flying many missions as aircrew from RAF Leuchars.

While based at Leuchars he met Maureen Keaty, a WAAF from Dundee, whom he married. The couple had two children.

Dundee became his adopted home after the war, and he worked as a production engineer at NCR.

He was an accomplished ice hockey player, however it was basketball he played in Dundee, with the NCR team. He was a founder member and coach of the Bisons, who played in the Scottish Basketball League.

Mr Ives later worked as a production manager for another Dundee firm, Hamilton Carhartt, at Carolina Port, and received his gold watch for more than 15 years’ service.

A passionate sportsman, he was a member of Downfield and Carnoustie Golf Clubs.

Mr Ives was also an accomplished singer.

Together with wife Maureen, he was a regular performer on the amateur stage in Dundee and Angus, accompanied on the piano by their daughter Anne-Marie.

He was a member of Downfield Musical Society, Broughty Ferry Operatic Society, Tayside Opera and Dundee Choral Union, and for many years was choirmaster of St Vincent’s RC Church in Pitkerro Rd.

The last two years of his career were spent in South Africa.

Mr Ives then retired to his native Canada.

He continued to play golf and skip one of the top curling teams in his home town until about two years ago, when his health began to fail.

Mr Ives is survived by his second wife Maggie Dupuis, his two daughters Anne-Marie and Jane, and five grandchildren.
