Dundee United have found their cup final team

Ryan Dow celebrates his goal against Motherwell. But will he start at Hampden?

I wouldn’t put it as high as panic.

But there was definitely strong concern this time last week for followers of Dundee United that this season wasn’t going to pan out as they had envisaged.

Europa League qualification through the league looked beyond them after the defeat to St Johnstone. It probably still is.

But, the Scottish Cup final is the fans’ main focus, and despite what will be trotted out by management and players over the next couple of weeks, it’s their main focus as well.

It was with that in mind that the Perth low was unsettling.

Of course, United could win their last three matches as handsomely as this one but still the question will remain do St Johnstone have their number?

If they do, it will be more to do with the mind than the body, because United showed against Motherwell that they are not a tired team, and that their best players still have great games left in them.

Stuart Armstrong, Nadir Ciftci, Gary Mackay-Steven and Andy Robertson reached varying degrees of excellence.

They also showed that they could handle a physical battle, which was provided by John Sutton at one end and Shaun Hutchinson and Stephen McManus at the other.

If I was picking the United team for May 17, the one which faced Motherwell on Saturday would be the starting 11.

Ryan Gauld and John Souttar will have long and successful careers ahead of them, and will probably bank millions for the club when they are lured away from Tannadice.

Ryan Dow and Sean Dillon are in better form at the moment though. It might not be Jackie McNamara’s natural inclination, but they should be picked for Parkhead.
