Former boxer helping to knock St Johnstone squad into even better shape

St Johnstone boss Steve Lomas has used his West Ham connections to bring a fitness trainer on board.

Former Australian rugby player Alan Pearson has been working with the Perth players this week. Lomas was impressed with his techniques when he was put through his paces by Pearson as a Hammers player, and he believes his own squad will also benefit from his expert input.

The Saints manager reported: ”He’s a fitness guy, and it will be something a bit different for the boys. It’s always good to have a different voice from just me and Tommy.

”He’ll work on things like foot movement and co-ordination.”

By the sound of things, Pearson cuts an imposing figure and the McDiarmid Park men will be on their best behaviour.

Lomas explained: ”Big Alan is 6ft 4in and he used to play rugby in Australia and has done a bit of boxing in his time so the lads won’t want to mess with him!

”They won’t want to sit next to him at lunch either because he’s a big unit to fill!”

Meanwhile, Lomas has praised centre-back Steven Anderson and predicted even better is still to come from the Saints defender.

He said: ”I’m more than chuffed with him. He’s keeping an experienced centre-half like Davie McCracken out of the team. Davie’s acknowledged to me how well Ando is playing at the moment.”
