Goodwillie admirers would need to dig deep

Dundee United chairman Stephen Thompson has expressed doubts over the viability of any bid from Rangers for David Goodwillie.

The Light Blues are reportedly lining up a £750,000 swoop for the Clydesdale Bank SPL young player of the season.

However, Thompson said, “We have had no contact from Rangers or any other club about David Goodwillie.

“I have seen the figures mentioned and the first thing I would say is that any club bidding that (amount) would be wasting their time completely.

“If that is all someone can offer then they shouldn’t bother because it would take much more than that for us to give it any serious consideration.

“David is signed up on a long-term contract and we want him to remain with Dundee United.”

Thompson has become accustomed to seeing his players linked with moves elsewhere and the Goodwillie link comes hot on the heels of Middlesbrough’s interest in Morgaro Gomis and Craig Conway, with Boro scout Gordon McQueen watching that pair at Motherwell last Sunday.

Birmingham boss Alex McLeish has also been keeping tabs on defender Garry Kenneth.

“When you are doing well people will get linked with your players,” added Thompson.

“There is nothing you can do to prevent that and it is something we will probably see more of over the summer.

“But one thing is for sure nobody will be leaving Dundee United on the cheap.”

The Tannadice chairman was at the launch of the club’s season ticket package featuring Goodwillie’s image on Wednesday, where he urged fans to stay behind the team by making an investment.

He said, “Season ticket income is vital to the club and our package is designed to offer a range of prices to provide a structured income for the club and savings to our regular supporters.”

“Following last year’s price freeze, we have had to increase prices slightly in most categories, but this has allowed us to reduce the prices for kids under 12 years old to the equivalent of just £2 per game.

“It is important for the future of Dundee United, and indeed football as a whole, that we encourage these youngsters to attend games on a more regular basis and I’m sure that all Arabs will support this move.

“I firmly believe that Dundee United offers its supporters some of the most competitive and keenly-priced season tickets in the SPL and I hope that even more will take advantage of our offers to support us in what promises to be yet another exciting season in 2010/11.”
