Montrose v Arbroath: Harwood joins in time for derby

Montrose have signed Dundee United defender Adam Harwood on loan.

The 19-year-old from Northern Ireland has joined the Gable Endies until January 23 and could go straight into the starting line-up for the Angus derby against League Two leaders Arbroath.

Manager George Shields said: “We have signed Adam on a short-term loan and coming from United you know you are getting a quality player.

“He will be ready to play if we chose to pick him and that may be the case because we have still have Alan Campbell injured.”

The Hallowe’en costumes have not yet been looked out but Montrose and Arbroath are about to play each other for the fourth time.

That’s a scary statistic this early in the season.

Worryingly for the Gable Endies they have yet to be victorious against their Angus rivals, with the Lichties having triumphed in the previous League Two clash, drawn in the Scottish Cup and then won the replay.

However, Shields feels it could be Montrose turn this afternoon.

“We are maybe due one because the three games so far have been close and we have not been outplayed in any of them,” added Shields.

Arbroath stood up well to pressure from Annan in midweek to win 1-0 and secure their eighth success from nine league games and manager Allan Moore reckons that they will need to do the same at Links Park.

Moore said: “It is not ideal having to play Montrose for a fourth time in such a short period of time but we just have to get on with it.

“Having won against them in the league and then in the Scottish Cup, after a replay, they will be really keen to get the better of us.

“We need to be ready for that.

“We saw things out at Annan and got the 1-0 win, however I have to admit that we were not at our best.

“We missed chances in the first half which could have had the game over and done with.”

The Gayfield side will miss Craig Johnstone with an ankle injury and Jack Smith who has an elbow problem with Adam Hunter a doubt.
