Cowdenbeath remain without a win after their first two league games of the Championship season after being edged out by Livingston at a blustery Almondvale on Saturday.
Central defender Nat Wedderburn, however, feels that, in view of the fighting spirit which has been shown by the team in the opening fixtures, a confidence- boosting victory will be on the board soon.
“We didn’t play at all well in the first half” said the former England youth internationalist who joined Cowden from Corby Town last year. “And to lose a goal less than a minute after the interval changed the course of the game.
“After we fell two behind we battled back, Jon Robertson hit the crossbar then Lewis Milne scored with about a minute to go. Had Robbo’s shot gone in I felt we could have gone on to win the game.
“That’s how the team plays we never give up and even after Lewis pulled one back we still pushed hard for an equaliser but it wasn’t to be.
“We came here with confidence today after drawing with, and almost beating, a very good Falkirk side last week. That was a decent performance but we just need to get that first win to give us the confidence to move forward.”
Little of note occurred during the first 45 minutes as the players struggled to adapt in the strong winds and driving rain, but the spark which ignited the contest arrived just 27 seconds into the second half.
Danny Mullen drove his close range shot past Cowden keeper Thomas Flynn at the second attempt after Jon Armstrong had blocked his initial effort.
When Jordan White waltzed through the Cowden defence after some intricate build up work involving Keaghan Jacobs and Gary Glen to make it 2-0 with 16 minutes left, it looked like a simple case of Livi closing out the victory.
But the Fifers demonstrated their battling qualities when Robertson’s 81st minute effort crashed off the bar before Milne fired a 15-yard shot past Darren Jamieson near the end, leaving the home players relieved to hear the final whistle.
“I wasn’t even out of the tunnel for the second half when we found ourselves 1-0 down” said Cowden manager Jimmy Nicholl.
“We were poor today and that’s taking nothing away from Livingston who kicked the ball about well. Our performance was nowhere near the standard of quality which we normally have.”
