Queen of the South v Raith Rovers: Murray’s men are up for the fight

Raith Rovers manager Grant Murray reckons his side are up for the play-off fight.

Just 14 points separate top spot from eighth in the Championship and, although Rovers have not given up on their title hopes, securing a promotion play-off spot has become their immediate aim as most of the division will still fancy their chances of a top-four finish.

The Kirkcaldy club remain in the fourth and final play-off place and Murray wants his players to concentrate on cementing their status after the league bunched up once more.

“That’s the thing with this league,” he said. “I’ve said before, a couple of defeats and you can find yourself down the league.

“We haven’t dropped places but other teams have been allowed to win games and make it very close. From eighth to third is very close, and first and second is very close, so there’s nothing in it really.

“As I’ve stressed to our players, it’s about what we do. If you start worrying about other teams, it can affect your own game.”

Murray believes the team that can find some consistency in the final few months will probably go on to win the title.

Dundee looked like being that team a few weeks ago but Murray was not surprised to see Livingston get a result at Dens Park last week, making things wide open yet again.

“We found that ourselves with the run we went on at the start of the season,” he noted.

“You go on runs like that, you are there to be toppled off that. People want to be the first team to stop the run.”

Apart from long-term absentees keeper David McGurn and defender Paul Watson, Murray should have a relatively full squad to choose from ahead of Saturday’s trip to Queen of the South, with captain Jason Thomson available after suspension.

Striker Calum Elliot was withdrawn not long after an hour of last week’s draw at Morton but the Raith boss says there was nothing untoward.

He said: “Calum hadn’t trained one day last week, he had a heavy cold/flu thing so I just felt it was the right time to change it at that point in the game.”

Meanwhile, Rovers have reported a brisk uptake of tickets for the Scottish Cup fifth-round tie away to Hibs next month, with well over half of the 1,000 allocated being sold on Wednesday night.

Last night they confirmed they have secured more tickets and these will be available from today online or via ACA Sports in Kirkcaldy High Street.
