Arbroath 1 Dunfermline 2: Pars dent Lichties’ survival hopes

Arbroath work hard to block a shot from Dunfermlines Ryan Thomson.
Arbroath work hard to block a shot from Dunfermlines Ryan Thomson.

Arbroath are playing it down to the wire as they missed out on crucial points on Saturday to avoid the dreaded drop.

Everything rests on next week for the Lichties after Dunfermline Athletic took maximum points at Gayfield to end their three-week dry run.

Arbroath player-manager Paul Sheerin said post-match: “We were the better team, to be honest with you.

“We got the ball forward, perhaps not as attractive as we have been in the last few weeks but what we did do was get the ball in the box and ask questions of them.

“A couple of weeks ago I think a lot of people would have written us off to get to the last day, to East Fife.

“We can score goals, we know that. So hopefully next week we will take care of business.”

Pars boss Jim Jefferies has his eye firmly on the play-offs and what opportunities his second-placed side can take advantage of.

He said: “It’s important that we picked up a win today. The teams below us have lost a lot more and we’ve maybe got a couple of results against us and a couple of draws, so a win today gave us a wee lift.

“It’s all about next week, we’ll be looking at the play-offs and who we can get.”

An under-pressure Scott Morrison in goal was unable to hang on to a Stephen Husband strike and Ryan Thomson was on hand to open up the account for Dunfermline.

Shocked into action, Arbroath went on the offensive, boxing in the Pars who struggled to retain their advantage.

Alan Cook did a sterling job of keeping the assault moving over the next 10 minutes, creating some fine sorties down the flank and feeding it into the Dunfermline box to keep them on their toes with a flurry of chances being passed up by Paul McManus, Bobby Linn and Kenny Deuchar.

It was a physical game and referee Mat Northcroft dished out yellows before half-time for the Lichties’ Alex Keddie and Paul Sheerin and the visitors’ Ross Forbes.

Three more were handed out during the game, to the Pars’ Josh Falkingham and to Michael Travis and Kevin Nicoll of the home side.

Arbroath kept up the pressure going into the second half, with Travis using his head and slotting a Linn corner into the net 10 minutes in.

On equal footing, both sides battled for dominance with plenty of chances cropping up only to be lost.

Full-time Dunfermline, however, went ahead again on 78 minutes.

Andy Geggan was in the right place at the right time and powered in a close-range shot, with help from Danny Grainger, to retake the lead.

A plucky Arbroath tried to salvage a draw late on, but despite some good efforts from Linn and Ryan McGeever, Dunfermline walked away with the points to reinforce their play-off hopes.
