Brechin boss without four key players for crucial clash

Brechin’s squad will be stretched to the limit as they look to continue their promotion push against Ayr this afternoon.

City boss Ray McKinnon will be without four key players for the trip to Somerset Park in a game which has huge implications for both sides.

The Honest Men are involved in a relegation dogfight and are still kicking themselves after throwing away three points last week against second top Morton.

Ayr were leading 1-0 as the game entered the 90th minute but they ended up taking nothing from the match with Jim Duffy’s side scoring two late goals.

Brechin are still in fourth place in the League One table and they extended their advantage over Dunfermline to four points after coming from two goals down on Tuesday night against Peterhead to salvage a draw.

Now, McKinnon is looking for his depleted side to further cement their play-off place by picking up a result at Ayr.

The Glebe gaffer said: “It was definitely a point gained in midweek considering the circumstances.

“Hopefully it will also prove to be an important point.

“We were obviously disappointed to go 2-0 down with one of their goals coming from a deflection.

“However, the boys deserve great credit for the way they came back into it and it was a fitting reward for all their perseverance.

“Bobby Barr did really well crossing the ball for our first goal and then taking the pressure penalty in the 90th minute.

“I could barely watch and my heart was in my mouth when it hit the crossbar but to be honest, their keeper was never getting to it.

“Unfortunately, Bobby is now suspended for the Ayr game along with Colin Hamilton.

“We will also be without the injured Alan Trouten who is recovering from broken ribs along with Craig Storie who is away with the Scotland Under-19s.

“So it will be really tough to get anything against an Ayr side battling to stay up.

“I watched the highlights from their game last week against Morton and they deserved to win but were hit with two late sucker punches.

“So we are fully aware of how difficult it will be without four key men.

“On the plus side, Callum Tapping got another 20 minutes off the bench against Peterhead and he was outstanding again.

“After being out for so long with his knee injury, he is not ready to start but he can definitely make an impact as a sub.

“So despite having lads missing, hopefully we can go to Ayr and secure a result.”
