East Fife 1 Forfar Athletic 3: Loons boss ‘chuffed’ with performance

Ian Campbell paid tribute to his Forfar side after watching them take all three points from East Fife.

The win was no more than Forfar deserved for their performance in a game they dominated for large spells.

James Dale, Dale Hilson and Gavin Swankie wrapped up the win for Forfar, with Scott Durie replying for the hosts.

Forfar assistant Campbell said: “It was a good three points and I’m really chuffed with the performance. So is Dick.

“We went about our business properly and were always on the front foot. We didn’t give them a minute.

“We know we’ve got ability but you need to have work-rate as well, and I was absolutely delighted with the attitude of the players.”

Forfar should have been a goal up in the first couple of minutes when Hilson had a one-on-one with Greg Paterson, only to see the keeper dash off his line and snuff out the chance.

Craig Johnstone had tested Darren Hill’s goal for the home side with a rasping shot from just inside the box before Forfar grabbed the lead.

Dale picked up the ball inside the East Fife box and skipped past a couple of Fife defenders before sending his shot past Paterson.

East Fife tried to get themselves straight back into the game and Liam Buchanan and Nathan Austin linked up well, with Buchanan testing Hill.

The Methil men did manage to get the goal their pressure deserved but there was an element of good fortune about it. Scott Durie struck a volley from outside the box which looked to have been taken comfortably by Hill. However, the ball squirmed under his body and into the net.

Austin almost put the Fifers in front seconds later but his effort came back off the crossbar.

Forfar then stepped up a gear and went on to dominate their hosts until the end of the game.

They added a second when Hilson’s strike bobbled in front of Paterson and caught out the keeper.

Austin had another half chance for East Fife after he nicked the ball from Darren Dods but couldn’t convert his chance.

Forfar wrapped up the win late on when Swankie was released inside the box and beat Paterson well.

East Fife boss Willie Aitchison couldn’t hide his disappointment, saying: “We didn’t play well at all.

“The basics were all over the place. It’s really disappointing because we’re doing well in training but just didn’t do it on the park.

“We wanted to get the ball forward to Liam Buchanan, Nathan Austin and Cedric Tuta and play forward and not across, but it didn’t happen.”
