Dumbarton v Cowdenbeath: Nicholl ready to reward success

Cowdenbeath manager Jimmy Nicholl has told the players who secured their first win of the season last Saturday that they are the ones in possession of starting jerseys.

A depleted Blue Brazil side defeated Queen of the South 2-1 at Central Park and Nicholl is not planning to change what worked when the Fifers head to Dumbarton today.

Nicholl said: “It was terrific to win last weekend after a number of disappointing afternoons.

“To pick up the three points when we were down to the bare bones made the win even better.

“It looked like being a weakened team on paper but due to the result I am not planning many, if indeed any, changes for the Dumbarton game.

“Not only did the team that we put out win the game, they handled the setback of losing a goal in the second half well.

“We showed good character and a lot of dig and we will need to do that again to win this one.”

The Central Park boss added: “We have a good squad here and everyone will play their part throughout the season but I have told the players that what they do during a game is the best way to keep a starting jersey.

“It is important that having shown that we can win, we go to Dumbarton and do the same.”

A two-goal win would see Nicholl’s men come off bottom spot but the Northern Irishman would be happy with a success and a clean sheet.

He said: “It is important we make progress. Last week we only lost the one goal, which is good as have been working a lot on our defence.”

“Keeping Dumbarton out and coming home with the three points would be a terrific afternoon’s work.”

Nicholl hopes to have skipper John Armstrong and on-loan St Mirren midfielder Declan Hughes available after injury to add to his squad but Dean Brett is an injury doubt with Nat Wedderburn, Lewis Milne and Kenny Armstrong all ruled out again.
