Former Dundee defender tips Paul McGowan to shine at Dens

Paul McGowan has joined Dundee after leaving St Mirren.
Paul McGowan has joined Dundee after leaving St Mirren.

Former Dundee centre-half Declan Gallagher insists Paul McGowan will be a big hit with the Dark Blues.

The attacking midfielder signed a two-year deal with Dundee last week following his release by St Mirren.

Gallagher, like McGowan, started out playing youth football at Celtic and he knows just what the new Dundee addition is capable of.

Gallagher said: “Paul is a match-winner. He is the kind of player who can change a game in a split-second.

“I think he will be a great signing for Dundee. I know him from Celtic and he’s got loads of ability.

“I’m sure the fans will love him and he’ll relish this latest challenge. He’s off the cuff. That’s the great thing about him.

“Paul works hard for the team as well so he’s the complete player.”

Gallagher turned down the opportunity to stay at Dens at the end of last season, rejecting the offer of a new contract.

And he revealed that he has still not been snapped up by another club yet.

Gallagher added: “I’ve not got anything at the moment. But I’m training as hard as I can on my own with a view to going into somewhere for pre-season training. This is a new chapter in my career.

“I’m looking forward to the challenge and hopefully get something sorted soon.”

Meanwhile, another former Dundee favourite Gary Harkins has left St Mirren by mutual consent.

The midfielder, who has had two spells at Dens Park, spent the latter part of last season out on loan at Oldham Athletic, netting five goals in 24 appearances.
