Dundee 2 Raith Rovers 0: Teenager Craig Wighton hailed as ‘one of the best’

Dundee winger Nicky Riley has tipped striker Craig Wighton for the top after the teenager netted his first senior goal for the club.

Wighton scored the Dark Blues’ second in their 2-0 win over Raith Rovers on Saturday and Riley reckons there is much more to come for the talented 16-year-old, whose goal capped a fine individual performance.

“Obviously that’s his second start but he showed his ability for a 16-year-old,” Riley told Courier Sport.

“You could see he was growing in confidence and he got into the game. He did well and to be honest I enjoyed playing with him.

“He’s quite a quiet lad and he’s level-headed, but he’s going to need to be. Anyone coming in and playing first-team football at that age, it’s a big stage and a big step for him.

“He showed against Raith what ability he has got and it’s just a case of building on it. You almost forget his age. A lot of people at 16 can be a little bitty in and out of games, but he was at the heart of things for the whole game.”

His comments were echoed by Dark Blues boss John Brown, who knows a number of other clubs will be monitoring Wighton’s progress closely.

Brown said: “He just turned 16 in August but you can see he has got what it takes to play at this level and be comfortable in possession.

“He’s one of the best I’ve seen at that age.”
