Dundee United relaxed about Nadir Ciftci’s Celtic link

Dundee United assistant manager Simon Donnelly has shrugged off the latest Celtic connection to one of their top players.

The Hoops were reported to be lining up a £1.5 million bid for Nadir Ciftci in the summer despite the Turk still having a year left on his Tannadice contract.

The very thought of losing their star striker to Ronny Deila’s team will fill United fans with dread, coming in the wake of the double switch made by Gary Mackay-Steven and Stuart Armstrong to Parkhead on the final day of the January transfer window.

The transfers of Armstrong and Mackay-Steven to Celtic sparked a serious dip in form that has seen the Tangerines win only two games out of 14 since the pair moved on.

So you can see why Ciftci following them to Glasgow would be the last thing the supporters would want and the United board would resist any approach from Celtic Park.

However, Donnelly was in relaxed mood when quizzed about the link.

“I think there is speculation all the time and we can’t do anything about that,” he said.

“To put a positive spin on it, I suppose it means Nadir is doing something right if he is getting mentioned.

“He is a good player and can be one of the best when he is on his game.

“It is up to us to try to get the best out of him for United as much as possible.”
