Thompson coy on claims Dundee United still own slice of Ryan Gauld

Dundee United chairman Stephen Thompson has declined to discuss apparently leaked details of former player Ryan Gauld’s transfer to Sporting Lisbon.

The controversial website Football Leaks, which recently revealed details of Gareth Bale’s transfer to Real Madrid, has made numerous claims about the deal United secured for the young midfielder.

It claims that Gauld, who left Dundee United for £2.2m in 2014, could be worth at least an additional £1m to the club.

The site reported that the club still own 20% of the player and that Sporting have the right to buy that out in 10% tranches at £500,000 a time.

The website also claims that United have inserted a 15% sell-on fee clause that could net them further money if the player were to be sold by Sporting for more than £5 million.

It also gives details of a friendly match between United and Sporting. That match was rumoured at the time of Gauld’s transfer but it never took place.

Asked about the Gauld deal, Stephen Thompson said: “I’m not comfortable discussing what is supposed to be confidential contract information.

“All I will say is that we put a lot of work into making every deal right for United.”

Football Leaks has already revealed the closely-guarded details of many transfers, including Mesut Ozil’s transfer from Real Madrid to Arsenal and Radamel Falcao’s loan signing for Chelsea.

The website has claimed that it has published less than 1% of the details it has uncovered in the name of “transparency”.
