Dundee United’s Gary Mackay-Steven respects manager’s decision

Dundee Utd's Gary Mackay-Steven came off the bench against Partick Thistle.

Gary Mackay-Steven knows he can take nothing for granted this season, such is the strength of the Dundee United squad.

The 22-year-old is one of the Tangerines’ prize assets and is in Scotland manager Gordon Strachan’s squad for next week’s eagerly-anticipated friendly against England.

Despite that, the Thurso-born wing wizard was only selected as a substitute for United’s Premiership opener last Friday night against Partick.

“GMS” though insists he fully accepted boss Jackie McNamara’s decision and he is now doubly determined to force his way back into the starting line-up.

He said: “There is a lot of competition for places and that can only benefit us going forward.

“We have strength in depth in all areas and everyone will be needed during the season. Starting on the bench was just one of those things and you have to respect the manager’s decision.

“I was a little bit disappointed not to start but it makes you work even harder when you come on to try to make sure you are in the team next week.

“The gaffer has a lot of attacking players and we can play different formations so he went with what he thought could win the game.

“The boys did really well. It should keep everyone on their toes which bodes well for us.”
