Hibs v St Johnstone: Tommy Wright recalls last Butcher match

Tommy Wright’s first enounter with Terry Butcher came in the cauldron of a Tyne-Wear derby.

The new Hibs boss was more menacing than usual back then, too, he revealed.

Wright recalled: “The only time I ever played against Terry was in a Newcastle v Sunderland derby when he was player-manager at Sunderland.

“We won the game 1-0 and I always remember that Terry turned up with a shaved head that day.

“I think he had his war face on he was so fearsome I imagine it probably scared his own players never mind the opposition.”

Wright believes Hibs are already starting to look like a Butcher side.

“Terry will have gone into Hibs and made an immediate impact because he’s got such a big personality,” he noted.

“He is a motivator, he’ll have them fired up and well organised. Already they look harder to beat and more confident.

“That would have been his first objectives because it gives him something to build on. They are hard to beat, they’ve looked good defensively so now he’ll be wanting them to kick on and win matches.

“They have good players but they have maybe had a knock because they’ve not lived up to expectation in the last few seasons. But Terry is the kind of manager who gets people believing in themselves and gives the place a lift.

“Just look at what he did for Inverness and you see exactly why Hibs wanted them as their new manager.”
