St Johnstone in talks with star strike partners

Stevie May and Steven MacLean celebrate against Partick Thistle.

There is good news for St Johnstone fans hoping to see their prolific strike partnership stay together for another season.

Perth boss Tommy Wright revealed that Steven MacLean’s new deal is nearing completion, while Stevie May reported talks are about to commence on extending his stay at McDiarmid Park beyond 2015.

Wright, who is also optimistic that Lee Croft will re-sign despite interest from Aberdeen and Hibs, said: “Steven MacLean’s situation has moved on a bit.

“We will have another chat and we are getting closer. Players tell you they want to stay but until it is done we take nothing for granted.

“If it is correct that Hibs and Aberdeen are after Croft we can’t compete with them in terms of wages. They could come in and offer more money. But I would be very hopeful that we can keep both players.

“Steven Anderson has a year option as part of his deal and we are waiting to see if he is going to take that up. The ball is in his court.

“There has been movement on some of our younger players and over the next few days three or four should be signed up.”

“There is a lot ongoing at the moment. I have spoken to Gary Miller and Paddy Cregg’s agents this week and when we spoke to Nigel Hasselbaink’s agent back in January he intimated they would wait until the end of the season.

“I think we have 13 signed up for next season to give us something to build on. We also know players will be available in the summer. The market has changed and it is almost back in favour of the clubs. I’m hoping if we get the players signed up we are looking at only two or maximum of three players coming in.”

May said: “We’re hoping to sit down in the next week or so, have a discussion and see what both parties have got to say.

“I don’t see any reason why I shouldn’t be here next season. I love it here and I’ve had a successful season.

“It’s a club that is close to my heart. I live just round the corner from the stadium, which is perfect for me and my family. There is no reason for me to say I want away. I’m in no rush to move to England. I’m still improving and this is the perfect club for me to develop at.”
