St Johnstone expect tough test from Morton

Tommy Wright.
Tommy Wright.

St Johnstone manager Tommy Wright has warned that Morton will be no League Cup quarter-final soft touches.

The Perth side avoided the five other Premiership sides in the last eight draw, as well as promotion-chasing Hibs.

But Wright has checked out Morton in person, and was impressed with what he saw of tonight’s opponents.

“I have been told it was the draw we would have wanted but that is being disrespectful to Morton,” the Northern Irishman pointed out.

“They have proved hard to beat down there and have scored three against a Premiership team already when they beat Motherwell in the third round.

“That is all the warning we should need.

“I watched Morton against Queen of the South and they have some quality players.

“They will be difficult opposition.”

Saints will have to do without their captain for this evening’s match, and Saturday’s trip to Hamilton.

Wright said: “Dave Mackay misses the next two games.

“I still think it could have been a yellow but we take that on the chin and move on.

“We would have been freshening up the team anyway with three games in a week. That is common sense to make sure we get the best out of everyone over the course of a season.

“Our only injury is Chrissie Millar, who is definitely ruled out.”

He added: “We have a good strong squad, as we showed with the substitutions at Inverness.

“We know we can play better with the ball. But we were solid and nullified their threat.

“We showed all the attributes people have associated with these players in recent seasons.

“There were stats suggesting they had 69% possession but sometimes that’s the way we like it. We can deal with that.

“It was good to get the first clean sheet with a good solid performance at a ground where we don’t normally do very well.

“The win puts us into the top six but no prizes are given out at this stage of the season. We aren’t shouting from the rooftops.”
