Things are not going well at Hughenden at the moment and as a result, Hillhead Jordanhill have become whipping boys in BT National Division 1.
Going into Saturday’s game with Dundee High Rugby, the home side had no wins from five starts, already shipping an average of a fraction under 46 points per game.
Sentiment doesn’t come into it at this level, however, and the Dundee side took full advantage to hand the hosts defeat number six and coincidentally maintained the home side’s average deficit, coming away with a hefty 46-15 scoreline which keeps them third in the table.
High were 19-5 ahead at the break and their final tally came from tries by Nick Alston and Ronan Joy with two each, and one apiece from George Arnott, Blair Cochrane, Ross Lemon and Harry Miller with Miller obliging with three conversions.
The Mayfield men are now tucked into third spot in the table, two ahead of Watsonians, four behind GHA and seven adrift of leaders Selkirk.
A trip to Dumbreck for their BT National 2 clash with Cartha QP proved a banana skin of massive proportions for Howe of Fife who suffered their first defeat of the season, going down 21-20 after leading by 15-7 at half-time.
Alisdair Wilson and Graham Thomson had first half tries for Howe, Dom Martin converted one and added a penalty and Wilson grabbed a second after the break. However, with Wayne Burrows converting tries by Ross Gillies, Nicol Smyllie and a penalty try, Cartha edged it by one point.
That shock result leaves Howe still at the top of the table but only by differential over Falkirk, who are also on 26 points and they both have Hamilton breathing down their necks only one point less.
It was a long trip but it proved worth it for Aberdeenshire who travelled to face Whitecraigs at Aurs Road and came away with a 20-10 win.
That takes them into seventh spot, only two behind Kirkcaldy.
Sean Murchie and Ian Redmond had first half tries for Shire with Adam Blake popping over a conversion and a penalty.
Ally Stevenson landed a penalty for the home side but they could only add a Nicky Blamire try after the break while Shire nicked a third try through Brad Fraser to clinch the points.
A trip from east to west which proved to be not as profitable as Aberdeenshire’s, was Kirkcaldy’s visit to Memorial Field, Ardrossan, where the Accies had the best of a second half after the scores were tied 10-10 at half-time.
Ian Carson had a first half try for Kirkcaldy. Finlay Smith added the conversion and a penalty but his conversion of Dayle Turner’s second half try was not enough to prevent a home win.
Accies ran in tries from Iason Dagdelenis, Nathan Welsh and one each for the Hunters, Bruce and Rob, with Stuart Lewis slotting a conversion and a penalty to bring up a 25-17 win.
The defeat, despite not even claiming a losing bonus point, still leaves Kirkcaldy in the top half of the table in sixth spot.
It was always going to be a tough one at North Inch for Perthshire in their BT National Division 3 clash with league leaders Dumfries and so it proved as the Park Farm crew ran out comfortable 33-8 winners.
Shire sit in eighth spot in the league with 15 points but the four teams below them are toiling with Hawick YM on seven points, Dalziel on six, Murrayfield Wanderers on two and Dunfermline, after losing 27-13 to East Kilbride, still without a win.
Provided Shire can continue to pick up enough points, particularly from their home games, they should avoid being drawn into the relegation battle.
