Musselburgh 30-28 Kirkcaldy: Winless Fifers making points

To have taken four points from their first two matches in RBS Championship B and still not won is a remarkable if frustrating achievement by Kirkcaldy.

They followed up last week’s 10-10 draw with Haddington with another nail-biter at Stoneyhill where they came out just on the wrong side of the 30-28 scoreline. Musselburgh were ahead 17-10 at the break.

Lock Joshua James and wing Adam Hook had the first half tries for Musselburgh, scrum half Danny Owenson converted both and slotted a penalty but a try from Dale Tuner and a conversion and penalty from the boot of Jamie Moffat kept Kirkcaldy in the game at the break.

Centre Willie Todd had the only home try in the second half with Kirkcaldy cranking up the action with three tries from Conor Littlejohn, Quinten Sanft and Moffat, with one of his conversions and a penalty going over.

However, it was the conversion of Todd’s try and another couple of penalties from Owenson which clinched the points for the home side, leaving Kirkcaldy with only the consolation of try and losing bonus points.

The season could not have started better for Aberdeenshire with their 39-15 win over Hawick YM last week, but they came crashing back to earth after going down by 38-15 to Lasswade at Hawthornden.

It was all to play for at the break at 10-10 with Gordon Ward grabbing the Lasswade try and Bernie Hennessey landing the conversion and a penalty, a sequence mirrored by Shire with Will Parker converting his own try and adding a penalty.

They could only add a Stuart Douglas try after half-time, though.

Lasswade stretched away with two tries from full back Andy Hall, one from lock Ally Lamond and a try and four conversions from Hennessey, who ended up with a haul of 18 points.
