East Dock Street roadworks postponed for Open traffic

Work will be carried out on East Dock Street over the next few weeks.
Work will be carried out on East Dock Street over the next few weeks.

Major roadworks planned for Dundee city centre have been delayed by a day as the Open Golf continues at St Andrews.

Engineers working for gas distribution network company SGN were to have begun tearing up the west-bound carriageway of East Dock Street this morning to upgrade the gas network.

With heavy rain and high winds affecting play on the Old Course, however, the championship has continued into a Monday for the first time since 1988 and only the second time history.

Thousands are expected to make their way to the Fife coast to take in the action with a large number of players still in contention for the coveted title putting pressure on the roads.

And with that in mind, SGN decided to hold-off starting the roadworks until Tuesday.

A spokeswoman said: “Our works are all undertaken in consultation with the council and other agencies and with the Open Golf continuing we decided to postpone the works by a day.”

Once they begin, the works are expected to take six weeks to complete and will operate “seven days a week, 7am to 7pm”.

For the duration of our work a contraflow will be set up in the eastbound lanes between Peep O’Day Lane and Market Street, with SGN working in the westbound lane.

A contraflow system will be in place on the eastbound lane.

Drivers are likely to face delays and it’s recommended that anyone travelling through the area allow extra time for their journey.

Meanwhile, works have begun on Arbroath Road, where there will be seven days of disruption as new road markings are painted between the Scott Fyffe roundabout and Eden Street.

A stop/go system will be in place by the Scott Fyffe for the duration.
