‘Get with the times’, say supporters of Dundee FC stadium plans

Dundonians are divided over the Dundee FC stadium plans at Camperdown.

Plans are in the works for a new Dundee FC stadium beside Camperdown Park.

Volunteers at The Camperdown Growing Initiative spoke out against the bid, saying that the stadium would disturb one of Dundee’s green spaces.

Camperdown Park is currently a retreat away from the city and a stadium with noisy football fans will “disturb the peace”, say volunteers at the community garden.

But what do you think of the stadium?

‘Get with the times and move forward’

Our story on these concerns over the stadium plans inspired many comments from those passionately for and against the bid.

One reader said: “Let’s face it, our Dundee is getting left behind in the dark ages.

“A stadium fit for concerts, who doesn’t want that? […] Get with the times and move forward.”

The stadium could be stretched to 25,000 seats to accommodate concert-goers.

Another pointed out: “Objections without solutions does not accelerate progress.”

The Campy Growers however have suggested that the land could better serve the environment if used for community gardens, as the old horse field is well-manured land and good for growing food.

A reader also commented: “I’m [a Dundee United fan] and even I see this as a weak argument. These parts of the Camperdown site are derelict, and have been all my life.”

The stadium going ahead would be ‘horrendous’

The stadium is still in the planning stages, say the developers.

And they would complete environmental studies to limit their impact on the area.

But one reader has insisted that the stadium “should not be allowed”.

They called stadium plans an “environmental disaster in a green space”.

This reader called for the plans to be reconsidered, imploring “please rethink this [nonsense]”.

Another admitted they were distressed by the plans.

“This is very upsetting,” they said.

“This beautiful green space is a gift to all Dundonians.

“What a blow to the wild animals, birds and insects who populate the area, not to mention us human visitors.”

‘Kingsway will be a nightmare’

Traffic congestion on match days was also a concern for readers.

One said: “It absolutely will impact the park.

“Fans, unwilling to queue or pay to use the official car park, will park up inside Camperdown, very probably on verges or grass areas.

“The Kingsway will be a nightmare on match days!”

Another disagreed, claiming: “Given most fans travel by car or bus, the A90 is a perfect location for a new stadium.”

Let’s face it, these so-called campy growers are secretly [Dundee United] fans trying to sabotage this.”

Another of our readers seemed to doubt the identity of the Camperdown Growing Initiative volunteers altogether, leaving a tongue-in-cheek comment on our site.

He said: “Let’s face it, these so-called campy growers are secretly [Dundee United] fans trying to sabotage this.

“I can see the orange scarf hidden underneath that fleece.”
