Woman’s pass retained only because it was faulty, says Dundee bus firm

Dundee bus firm Xplore says it has concluded its investigation into a row over the apparent confiscation of a dementia sufferer’s bus pass.

The company faced fierce criticism over the weekend after a woman took to Twitter to claim her mum’s disability pass was confiscated. It was alleged the driver had taken the pass meant for disabled people, saying the woman “didn’t look it”.

Following an investigation, Xplore says it is satisfied the reason the pass was taken was because it was faulty.

A spokesman said: “Further investigation has revealed that the disabled pass presented by this customer was not working, and therefore retained by the driver so that it can be returned to Dundee City Council, as per our normal procedures.

“The customer was issued with a seven-day concession paper ticket to allow her to travel until her new card arrives.

“We’ve also been in touch with the council to ensure this new card is being issued as quickly as possible.

“Our drivers are professionally trained to deal appropriately with the various needs of everyone who uses our services and we appreciate the importance of elderly and disabled being able to use our services easily and independently.

“We apologise for any distress caused in this instance and we hope she will not be deterred from using our services in future.”

The spokesman added that the daughter of the customer in question is satisfied with the findings.
