Drivers are being warned of eight weeks of disruption during roadworks on the A9 between Perth and Inverness.

One lane of the Drumochter dual carriageway will be shut in both directions from Monday, for the replacement of barriers in the central reservation.

Drivers will also face a reduced 50mph speed limit.

The A9 roadworks are due to last for eight weeks, though the lane closures will be removed for Christmas from Friday December 23 until Wednesday January 4.

All works are scheduled to be completed by Friday January 27.

It comes just days after resurfacing work on the A9 at nearby Dalnaspidal had to be called off during the day after causing tailbacks lasting more than an hour.

Meanwhile, the route may be busier in the coming weeks as a series of train strikes are likely to affect ScotRail services between Perth and Inverness.

A spokesperson for Bear Scotland, which is carrying out the roadworks, said: “To ensure the safety of roadworkers and road users, single fast lane closures will be in place 24 hours a day while the works are taking place, on the A9 northbound and southbound.

50mph limit to remain over Christmas

“The speed limit through the works will also be reduced to 50mph for the duration of the project.

“The single fast-lane closures will be removed over the holiday period but the 50mph speed limit will still be in place while the works are halted, for the safety of motorists.”

Drivers are being encouraged to check the Traffic Scotland website for the latest information before making their journeys.
