Scarlets 10 Glasgow Warriors 46: Finn shows fine timing

Finn Russell reckons Glasgow have timed their revival to perfection in their quest to cling on to the Pro12 crown.

The in-form Scotland pivot issued his confident verdict after playing a blinder in the demolition job on the Scarlets.

Russell bagged two outstanding tries, had a hand in three others – and slotted a string of crucial kicks to severely dent the hosts’ hopes of also reaching the title play-offs.

He declared: “Earning a home semi-final is definitely the goal at the moment.
“And if we can keep performing like this in our last two league matches against Zebre and Connacht, then that is definitely within reach.

“A few weeks ago we are still lying in mid-table, but now we have established momentum.

“Claiming bonus points over the last three weekend has been a big factor.”

The win was Glasgow’s eighth on the trot – a club record.

And coach Gregor Townsend said: “Finn scored a great opening try and showed skill later on to touch down in the corner at the end of the first half.

“Since the end of the Six Nations we’ve done really well, beating Leinster and Ulster before winning three away games in a row.

“That has been an excellent achievement.”

A clever line-out ploy laid the foundations for Russell to claim his first score.
There appeared to be no gaps in the Scarlets defence, so he sent a mini-lob into the touchdown-zone – and scuttled through to make sure.

He then squeezed in at the corner when there seemed to be no way through.
Touchdown No3 came when Pyrgos snatched turnover possession, dashed into enemy territory – sending Lee Jones clear.

And Glasgow couldn’t have dreamed of a better start to the second half.

A silky handling move culminated in Tommy Seymour evading two markers, allowing Pyrgos a cruise to the line for the bonus score.

Mark Bennett made no mistake on the hour as he scooped up a loose ball to stroll in under the crossbar.

Seymour ruled out any prospect of a Scarlets fightback – thanks to top-notch build up work by the rampant Russell.

There was still time for Jones to go over again to round off the rout.

Scorers:

Scarlets – Try: L Williams. Con: Shingler. Pen: Shingler
Glasgow – Try: Russell 2, Jones 2, Pyrgos, Bennett, Seymour. Con: Russell 4. Pen: Russell.
