Young thieves who led police on high speed chase through Montrose detained for 11 months

Two men who led police on a high speed chase through the streets of Montrose have been detained for 11 months.

Michael Beaton, 17, and Aden Robertson, 20, both c/o Grampian Prison, were involved in a string of thefts from Lochside Crescent and Glenprosen Street in the town on February 12 before they fled in a stolen car.

They appeared at Arbroath Sheriff Court on Tuesday for sentencing after previously admitting their own parts in the incident.

Beaton pleaded guilty on indictment to breaking into a garage on Lochside Crescent, Montrose, where he stole a digital camera, iPod Touch and a docking station.

On the same night he stole laptops, a handbag and its contents, plus a set of car keys and house keys from another address on Glenprosen Street. He committed the offences while on bail.

Robertson admitted stealing a car from Glenprosen Street before driving dangerously and at speeds of up to 100mph through a number of streets in the town and the A92 Montrose to Stonehaven road.

He also admitted using the car while disqualified from driving. Robertson’s defence agent told Sheriff Gregor Murray his client had a history of dangerous driving and it was something he would “need to get out of his system”.

“This was an extended chase, but is one that he bitterly regrets.

“He is fairly erudite,” he added.

Beaton’s plea in mitigation had been previously heard at the court and his solicitor spoke only to add that her client had recently spent a period on remand from the evening of the offence.

Sheriff Murray told Beaton he was developing a “significant record” and similarly warned Robertson of his history for “significant offences” of road traffic crimes and thefts, and that his actions put the police and anyone else on the road at that time in serious danger.

Robertson was also disqualified from holding a licence for five years.
