The traditional Boxing Day sales started with a bang, with thousands of people out and about taking advantage of some big bargains at stores across Dundee.

Electrical goods, mobile phones and computer accessories were the most popular targets, while clothing, especially winter woollies, were also flying off the shelves, according to staff at various outlets.

A spokeswoman for the Overgate said it had been “buzzing” all day with sales at stores including Argos, Next, Debenhams and H&M drawing in thousands of shoppers.

“It’s been busy with all the sales pretty much every shop has been busy,” she said.

“The whole centre has been buzzing all day. Christmas Eve was also especially busy, pretty much all day.”

Debenhams store manager Craig Barker said while he was unable to provide footfall figures, trading had “exceeded expectations.” He added that Christmas Eve had also been extremely busy.

Shelley Moore, store manager at H&M in the Overgate, said Boxing Day had been “better than expected.”

“We had a lot of gift card sales before Christmas so the kids have been coming in and buying clothes lots of jackets and winter wear, warm woolly scarves and stuff like that,” she said.

“We’ve had five tills running all day, which is unusual.”

Hinnan Gul, manager at Phones 4U, said business had been “exceptional” in the run-up to Christmas and continuing into yesterday.

“It was definitely a success. We were extremely busy today,” he said. “I wasn’t really expecting it to be so good because we were so busy before Christmas. We reached all our targets by 1pm today.

“Christmas Eve and the day before that were amazing as well.”

It was the same picture throughout the city centre with High Street and Murraygate packed with shoppers.

At the Wellgate Centre, stores were doing a roaring trade as shoppers spent Christmas money and cashed in gift vouchers.

Meanwhile Tesco Extra on Kingsway, Asda’s Kirkton and Milton of Craigie stores, Morrisons and Sainsbury’s were all thronging with eager bargain hunters and people already stocking up for New Year.
