A Broughty Ferry pensioner has told of the terrifying moment a coach crashed into the bus shelter he was sitting in.
Ivor Sutherland, 67, was left battered and bruised after the incident on the Ferry’s Queen Street on Thursday.
He was sitting on a narrow bench in the bus shelter beside the West End Garage when the incident took place.
The retired quality engineer said: “Everyone keeps telling me I had a lucky escape and that my injuries could have been so much worse, but it was a pretty scary moment.
“I had watched this coach going up and down the road a few times.
“Then the driver seemed to decide to do a U-turn in the middle of the road.
“As he was manoeuvring, the back rear window of the bus hooked on to the corner of the bus shelter where I was sitting.”
Mr Sutherland said the next he knew the roof had been ripped off the shelter and the entire metal framework had buckled.
He said: “Something very heavy landed on my foot and I knew I had to get out of the shelter.
“I’m glad I turned the way I did because I think that saved me from even worse injuries.
“I managed to get out of the bus shelter pretty quickly as the glass came crashing down.
“I could have been chopped up otherwise by the breaking glass.”
Mr Sutherland said the bus stopped and two women on board rushed to his aid, along with residents nearby and a group of workmen for the council.
Police arrived and took a statement from Mr Sutherland while making the area safe.
A spokeswoman said: “Officers are making inquiries into the incident.”
