A bid to open a multi-use path between Balmullo and Leuchars has gained the overwhelming support of folk in the community.
A survey found 99% of respondents supported the project to create a walking and cycling path alongside the C25 road.
Tay Bridgehead councillors Maggie Taylor and Tim Brett and Balmullo Community Council, which is overseeing the proposal, are delighted by the backing from Balmullo, Leuchars and Guardbridge residents.
Community council representative Irene McNair said, “It is clear from the survey results that there is very strong support for a multi-use path.
“The C25 road that links Leuchars and Balmullo has no pavement and there are several bends which make it a hazard to cyclists and pedestrians. A multi-use path would be well used and would encourage people to use it for work and leisure.”
Leuchars Community Council has also got behind the plans, saying the path would link with the cycle path from the village to St Andrews, allowing people to cycle into town.
Councillor Taylor praised the work of Balmullo Community Council in demonstrating the need for the path. She said, “Balmullo is not linked by any cycle paths or footpaths to other communities so people have to use either their car or public transport.”
Councillor Brett added, “The development of a path would fit with the council’s target to be the leading green council and would also have health benefits as more people would be encouraged to cycle or walk.”
Talks are thought to be under way with landowners to find a route for the path, which could be built by offenders under the Community Payback scheme.
One issue raised by many respondents to the survey was the perceived danger for walkers and cyclists on the C25, which prevented many using or it or allowing their children to use it.
