Brechin boss Darren Dods bolsters squad

Brechin boss Darren Dods has added another two players to his squad with Dene Shields and James Dale agreeing to join the club.

Man of many clubs Shields, who was playing for Gozo Football League First Division side Xewkija Tigers last season, featured as a trialist for City last week against Aberdeen and did enough to earn a deal.

Dale is someone Dods knows well as he was a team-mate of the 21-year-old at Forfar.

However, the new Glebe gaffer is still waiting to hear from Callum Tapping whether he will be putting pen to paper on a contract offer.

The former Hearts player suffered a serious knee injury last season but has battled his way back to full fitness and he has impressed Dods in training.

Tapping though is still hoping for a return to full-time football and continues to weigh up his options.

Dods said: “We have two signed up this week, Dene Shields and James Dale, and there are one or two others we are waiting to hear back from.

“We are also still keen to get Callum Tapping signed up.

“He has been training with us and has looked really sharp. He is still looking to go back to full-time football but I am hoping to have an answer from him by the end of the week.

“Our goalie Graeme Smith is back training after returning from holiday and Paul McLean has recovered from injury.

“Hopefully, we will have 11 signed up for this weekend’s friendly with Raith and I will bolster the squad with a few trialists.

“Obviously I would like a few more on board sooner rather than later but we still have a bit of time before we start playing competitive games.

“A lot of players are keeping their options open at the moment with Championship sides such as Queen of the South and Livingston, who have had their player embargo lifted, having a lot on trial just now.

“Also, players who were maybe full-time and have been released will probably wait another week or two before deciding whether to go part-time.”
