BT Caledonia: Gray comes to rescue as Glenrothes win in dying seconds

Glenrothes remain on the heels of BT Caledonia Division 1 pacesetters Gordonians after squeezing past Hillfoots 28-27 in a tense encounter at Carleton Park that was decided in injury time.

Two tries for Gareth Parry and one each for Gavin Paterson and Gregor Mcintosh, plus kicking contributions by Gregor Manson and Andrew Hamilton, left Hillfoots 27-21 ahead with seconds to play.

Stewart Hainey had touched down twice for the Fifers and Jordan Grubb had also crossed the whitewash, with Shaun Gray booting all three conversions.

Gray proved to be the matchwinner when he plunged over in the corner then thumped over the touchline conversion.

Elsewhere, Strathmore bounced back from a defeat the previous week to post a comfortable 44-5 win at home to Ellon, with James Kiely and Fraser Mackay among the tries, each bagging doubles.

Morgan Academy slipped into the bottom two after going down 38-17 at home to Mackie Academy.

Alloa continue to lead the way in Division Two (Midlands) on points difference ahead of Harris Academy after both won.

Harris, who have a game in hand over Alloa, trailed 19-17 at half-time in a fiercely-contested encounter away to Howe of Fife seconds, but stepped up a gear in the second period to post a 39-26 win.

Richie McIvor bagged a double for Harris and there was a try apiece for Jack Reavely, Owen McDonald, James Carr and Graeme Merry, while Stewart Walker and Mark Hogg shared the kicking duties to score the other points.

Alloa continue to occupy top spot on points difference after returning from the trip to Kinross with a 27-22 win under their belts.

Stevie Skelton was the key man for Alloa, converting first half tries by Kris Aitken and Daniel Murrell to leave his side 15-14 adrift at the break. He then added the extras after Murrell touched down for a second time and booted a penalty, before his late drop goal clinched victory.

Carnoustie remain in third place after chalking up the division’s most convincing result of the day when they saw off Madras Rugby 85-3.

Mike Downie and Ian Reed each scored a hat-trick of tries, while Owen Hughes had a double and there was one each for Dannie Van Niekerk, Chris Rankin, Craig Addison, Andy Clark and Lewis Thoms.

Arbroath remain firmly in control at the top of Division 3 (Midlands East) after returning from their match at Kirkcaldy seconds with a 40-5 win.

Second-placed Dundee University Medics fought out a 7-7 draw with Stobs-well at Forthill, while Waid Academy FP were 46-19 winners at home to Falkirk seconds and Montrose saw off Glenrothes seconds 47-7 at Union Park.

Bannockburn moved into second spot in Division 3 (Midlands West) after squeezing home 22-21 against Crieff & Strathearn at Bluebellwood Park.
