The last kick of the game in the BT National 1 clash at Riverside saw Dundee High Rugby snatch a win against Jed by 22-19, but they did it the hard way.
Ryan Gilson opened the scoring for Jed after 20 minutes with a converted try and the home side stretched their lead with a second try five minutes later from Ross Combe.
Hamish Livingston pulled a try back for the visitors with four minutes of the half remaining and Harry Miller’s conversion took the visitors in five points adrift.
Tim McKavanagh’s try quarter of an hour into the second half, and Miller’s conversion, gave High the lead for the first time and when lock Mark Harland crashed over on 60 minutes they looked to be heading for a comfortable win.
Then, with 10 minutes left, Robert Hogg snatched a try for Jed and the conversion tied the scores.
It took a last minute penalty by Miller to take the points back to Mayfield and leave the Dundee side third in the table, a point behind Selkirk and GHA.
In division two, a 43-17 win for Howe against Aberdeenshire takes them to the top of the table, although at only 17-13 ahead at the break, it looked as though it could be a lot closer.
Matt Emmison had a first half try for Shire with Thomas Kiawara converting and adding two penalties but Howe cut loose in the second half to rack up the points which gives them top spot on differential. Dom Martin was the top scorer with 23 points from two tries, five conversions and a penalty with the other tries coming from Ben Mitchell, Rob Douglas, Stewart Lethangie and Steven Player.
It was much closer call at Fort Matilda where Kirkcaldy took on Greenock Wanderers and almost saw an 11-0 lead evaporate to eventually come away with a 14-10 win.
Lock Rhys Bonnar romped through for a try after 26 minutes and although the crowd were treated to the unusual sight of the conversion being charged down, that try, added to Finlay Smith’s earlier two penalties, gave Kirkcaldy the half-time lead.
Gregor Fletcher got Greenock on the board with a try. Kenny Diffenthal converted from the touchline then added a penalty to cut the margin back to one point with 15 minutes left.
Smith slotted a third penalty for Kirkcaldy but poor hands decreed that a second try eluded them and they ended the game desperately defending against wave after wave of Greenock attacks.
That gives Kirkcaldy two wins from two starts and sees them handily placed in second spot behind Howe.
In National 3, the dismal start continues for Perthshire and Dunfermline.
Shire went down 41-18 to RHC with only a losing bonus from two starts, while Dunfermline took a hammering at McKane Park at the hands of Preston Lodge by 58-10 which sees them firmly anchored at the bottom of the table.
