Howe of Fife 88 Hawick 3: Howe score 14 tries in rout

It was yet another try-fest at Duffus Park as Howe caught up with their one outstanding RBS Championship B match on Saturday.

And the emphatic 88-3 triumph over Hawick ensured that if the league comes down to points differential they are way ahead of rivals Jedforest.

Gary Horne’s troops ran in 14 tries and the sole Hawick points came in the first half from Neil Imrie’s penalty but it hardly mattered as they turned round 45-3 adrift.

Girvin Imrie had a hat-trick, Alasdair Wilson, Chris Mason and Graeme Steedman had two each and the rest were shared among Jamie Ritchie, Angus Guthrie, Dom Martin and Terry Turpie, with Martin landing nine conversions.

That leaves the top of the table finely poised with Jed having played 16 with 71 points and Howe played 16 and on 70 points.

The remaining matches are on March 1 when Jed are at Livingston and Howe are at home to Murrayfield Wanderers then on March 22 when Howe travel to face Kirkcaldy and Jed are at Riverside to host Lasswade.

It could not be closer but the simple fact is that if Jed take both matches with a try bonus, the title is theirs.

* In the only other club rugby game played in Scotland at the weekend, Boroughmuir squeezed home against Selkirk by 20 points to 10 in their RBS National League clash.

Their victory extends their lead at the top, with second-placed Watsonians now 15 points behind. Dundee HSFP are fourth, two points off Stewart’s Melville FP.
