Dundee’s biggest gaming, animation and cosplay convention will celebrate its tenth anniversary this spring.
DeeCon, an annual fundraiser organised by animation students, has become one of the most popular events of its kind in Scotland and is expected to be bigger than ever when it returns to Dundee University in April.
The event will be held across three buildings on the campus and will include retro gaming, art stalls, cosplay masquerade, VR and more. Organisers hope to attract in excess of 3,500 visitors.
Megan Rossiter, third-year animation student and president of the DeeCon committee, said: “Before, DeeCon was held in the building in DUSA and the chaplaincy, but this year we have decided to expand it across the Bonnet Hall, as well as the other two buildings.
“We wanted to cater to as many stallholders as possible, so that they can have space to display their work in the best way.
“The fact that we have more venues will mean that we will reduce crowding, which was one of the complaints about previous events.
“It will make things easier for people with disabilities or anxiety, who find it difficult to navigate crowded spaces.
“Our aim is to make the event inclusive and accessible for everyone.”
DeeCon will be held on April 20 and tickets cost £5, with proceeds going towards the Animation students’ degree show.
Entry is free for children under 12, and all children must be accompanied by an adult.
Megan added: “It’s still too early to say how many people will come, but last year we had about 3,500, so we would like to get even more in April, hopefully.
“Previously the event has been very centred on anime and art, but now we want to cover more bases.
“A big part of this year’s event will be VR, which we hope will be a big selling point as it’s still quite a new thing.
“We also wanted to make the gaming aspect bigger, as Scotland has a big gaming industry. There will be retro gaming too, with Pinball machines.
“We hope that we will be able to cater to many different interests.”
