As a 1956 musical film, director Walter Lang’s version of The King and I was a critical and commercial success that was nominated for nine Academy Awards – winning five – including Best Actor for Yul Brynner.

The screenplay by Ernest Lehman was based on the Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II musical The King and I, based in turn on the novel Anna and the KIng of Siam by Margaret Landon.

Now Kirkcaldy Amateur Operatic Society (known locally as KAOS) are bringing their own version of the show to a close this weekend after their own successful run.

Inspired by the still relevant struggles between eastern and western cultures, The King and I tells the moving story of Anna, a British governess, who tries to help an eastern King to come to terms with the modern world.

The score includes I Whistle A Happy Tune, Hello Young Lovers and Getting To Know You.

*The King and I runs at the Adam Smith Theatre, Kirkcaldy on April 29 and April 30.
